Types of Body Negativity in Sports: Negativity From Teammates/Rivals
*TRIGGER WARNING: BULLYING
This week, we will talk about Body Negativity in Sports: Negativity from Teammates/Rivals. This article highlights bullying among teammates and rivals in general, but the general rules for overcoming their comments also apply directly to overcoming body-shaming comments.
As many know, one of the main motivators for bullying in any environment is jealousy. Jealousy can be fueled by two large motivators in sports, which are:
1. Accomplishments (especially if they are younger or the same age as them
2. Favoritism or more attention from coaches
Jealousy often comes out in the form of aggressive comments. The way to overcome these comments is both simple and difficult. The three recommendations for standing up for yourself are:
1. Verbally stand up
2. Ask for help (from a trusted adult)
3. Ignore the comments
Openly reacting to the comments often results in the continuation of them. Although ignoring the comments is extremely mentally and emotionally challenging, it often helps stop the comments altogether.
Again: Your health comes before all. If you feel like you are a victim of any type of verbal bullying, we suggest following these steps to overcome it.
