We Are Back! And With a Summer Reminder…
Hello all! We missed you!The reason for our absence has been due mostly to day-to-day busyness as well as a recommended hiatus from TAN work from a mentor to the founder as to avoid losing focus on her sports career. We deeply apologize for the extended break, but we are back and ready to work harder than ever.
With summer in full swing (almost coming to a close for students!), we are back with a summer reminder. In higher temperature environments, athletes may incorporate lighter athletic attire into their daily training. Examples of such athletic attire may include:
1. Shorts of any length
2. T-Shirts
3. Sleeveless shirts/tank tops
Unfortunately, when athletes wear these kinds of athletic clothes, some face scrutiny, open judgement, or negative comments from those around them. These comments can be prompted by anything, including reasons such as:
1. Intention to emotionally hurt/bring down the athlete
2. Feelings of jealousy that the commenter harbors (sports performance, body image issues, etc.)
3. Subconscious negativity
If you (athlete or no athlete) feel prompted to say something negative about an athlete’s body/weight/attire, take a moment to reflect on the following:
1. What is the real reason you feel this way?
2. Athletic attire is meant to be worn while playing sports and is 100% allowed…so what’s wrong with it?
3. Would you want this comment said to you?
4. Will this comment benefit you or the athlete?
If you are the athlete (or nonathlete) facing the negativity, it’s important to understand that many athletes experience this; you are not alone! Again, think of the reasons that someone may want to comment on an athlete’s body/weight/attire/etc.
Remember - YOUR ATHLETIC BUILD AND YOUR ATHLETIC CLOTHES HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON: THEY WERE BOTH MADE FOR SPORTS!
Enjoy the summer!
